The Diary of Anne Frank
You know those shows that you end up making more difficult for yourself in the name of art? This was one of those shows for me. When I began my research I read the book and then marked and charted every reference to their clothing. I looked at the historical images for hours wanting to do justice to this beautiful story. Then I discovered that because we are in one location of the entire play the costumes are what help the audience know time has passed. Each main character had ten costumes. They wore all of their clothing for Act One in with them when they went into hiding at the top of the show. Then their Act Two clothes were hidden in crates all over the set so they could appear to be brought in for them. After much work and time, I am greatful to say that it worked. The show came together and the clothing helped convey the heart and pain of such a remarkable story.
